Description
2.00pm Visit Snake Temple. Snake Temple, originally named "Temple of the Azure Clouds" in honor of the beauty of Penang's sky, is perhaps the only temple of its kind in the world. It was built circa 1850 in memory of Chor Soo Kong, by a Buddhist monk. Legend has it that Chor Soo Kong, who was also a healer, gave shelter to the jungle snakes. After the completion of the temple, snakes appeared on their own accord. The temple is filled with the smoke of burning incense and a variety of venomous pit vipers believed to be rendered harmless by the sacred smoke.
Kek Lok Si, The Temple of Supreme Bliss, is one of South East Asia biggest temple. This acclaimed tourist landmark has charmed millions with its pagodas, pavilions, fish ponds, countless buddhas and the towering bronze statue of the Goddess of Mercy (Kuan Yin).
Wat Chaiya Mangkalaram is a Thai Buddhist temple built in 1845 most notable for its gold plated Reclining Buddha statue, being 33 meters in length. On the temple grounds many colored statues of Devas and other mythical creatures are on display.
Burmese Temple, built in 1803 was the first Buddhist temple in Penang. The main attractions are the historical Pagoda, a 200 years old well, the main shrine hall, Panca-Rupa ( The Guardian Protector) and the Sima Hall where a very tall and large all-marble Buddha image is situated. At the main entrance archway, are vivid paintings depicting important events in the life of Buddha.
Thereafter, visit a shop for you to purchase native local products such as the famous Penang Tau Sar Pneah (bean paste biscuit), Belacan (shrimp paste), salted fish and nutmeg products. Then proceed to the trishaw terminal, where you will take a 10-minute trishaw ride along Jalan Penang to New Lane Hawker Centre to savour irresistible hawkers’ delight such as Laksa, Prawn Noodles, Chicken Rice, Char Koay Teow, Lor Bak, Nasi Kandar, Roti Jala, Satay and an array of Nyonya food (meal at your own expense). After a delightful meal, visit Gurney Plaza Shopping Centre.
